Summertime and Modesty

Ahhh, yes…

Summertime brings its own modesty challenges, because, well, the more clothes you wear the hotter you are(I mean that in a literal way BTW).

So in an effort to be helpful, I am going to share some of my summertime modesty tips… if you have any, please, DO SHARE :)

1. The very first modesty tip I have is to invest in some quality tank tops that you don’t need to layer.

You may remember my post from last year about the fabulous girls tank tops that I got at T@rget…  Alas, my search for great tank tops this year has not been as fruitful.

I really would like to order some of these:

from DownEast Basics, but they have been out of black and white for a while, and those are the two colors that I really need.

So, I caved and ordered the pricier ones from Shade:

I LOVE Shade, but I was disapointed with these tanks.  I got a black and white one.  The black one fit GREAT on the neckline, but was actually too big in the body(I ordered larges, so I could wear them as shirts, not as camis).  The white one fit great through the body, but was too low in the neckline and armpits.

Handily, I sew.  Because it is HOT here and I needed these tank tops NOW.

I have hopes for the new Lands End tank tops, and I want to get into my local Sears to try some on before I purchase them.

In the past, I thought they looked a bit matronly, and not long enough through the body, but I think these look cute:

What do you think?

Has anybody tried these?

Tip #2:

Half shirts/Cami’s:

Demi Cap Sleeve

I have one like this that I made(cut off a cap sleeve T and put elastic around the middle) and I LOVE IT.  I wear it all the time under stuff that has a lower neckline that I don’t need extra length on.
I also have one like this:
that I also made, and I love it as well.
Tip #3.  Remember the no “tight/tight” rule.  If you wear something more fitted on top, wear something looser on the bottom, and vice versa.. Think baby doll top with skinny capri’s, or fitted tank top with long flowing skirt.
Tip#4 DRESSES AND SKIRTS!  both options keep you cooler than having a lot of stuff coming together at your waist.  There are a LOT of great modest summer dress options out there, even from mainstream manufacturers…

Tip #5 Depending on the weather, I try to use my “short/long” rule.  If I wear sleeveless, I wear either capri’s, a long skirt or pants.  If I wear shorts, I wear a short sleeve shirt.  This is not a hard and fast rule, but providing extra coverage in one area can provide balance to help avoid skimpiness.
Tip #6 This last one may or may not fit with your lifestyle, but wearing sporty workout type outfits such as; moisture wicking shorts, capri’s and tanks can be a GREAT option for hot summer months.   The same rules of “tight/tight” and “short/long” apply, as does the “bra straps are not meant to be seen rule”.
Here are a couple of great options from Athleta:
Trek Tank
And here are some options from title nine:
Dynamic Tank
Newport Sleeveless Top
So there you have it, my summertime modesty tips to keep you covered, cute and COOL!  If you have any tips to add, or any thoughts, I would love to hear from ya!

  1. I have the no tight/tight rule too and also the no short/short rule – if its sleeveless on top then I have long bottoms or a long skirt. I have yet to get a pair of capris, so I stick mostly to skirts.

Have you tried some of the dresses from Athleta? I got two this summer and have been supremely satsified with them in length and in coverage.

I have a wedding (actually my sister’s wedding) in August and am searching for a perfect dress – the J Crew option is definitely in the running.

  2. Hey Nora- I have been eying a couple of the dresses from Athleta, but haven’t tried them b/c I am tall(5′8″) and thought they would be too short… I feel like I think you are tall, but I just realized that there is not way I could know that(unless laurie told me that…)

  3. I bought the ‘perfet tee’ from Down East Basics (along with swim wear) and absolutely LOVE it. I wear it ALL the TIME!!! Thank you so much for your recommendations on here!!!
